Led by Head Coach Kylee Byrne, this camp will be the first time the 21 and Under squad will physically train together due to the impact of COVID-19 over the past 12 months.
The three-day camp, being hosted at Netball ACT, is a major milestone in the group’s preparations for the Netball World Youth Cup which is set to be played in Fiji from 2-11 December.
Over the three days of activity, athletes will take part in match play, position-specific court training and off-court sessions such as performance analysis and nutrition education.
Byrne is delighted to finally be bringing the squad together in the one location.
“While we’ve had camps in each state and caught up via Zoom over the past few months, this camp has been a long time coming and the squad, including the coaching staff, are chomping at the bit to get out on court together and put our game plan and tactics into play,” she said.
“We have an enormous amount of talent within this cohort and I’m incredibly excited to see what we’re able to achieve over the next nine months – this camp will give everyone an opportunity to really settle into the group and begin to feel comfortable out on court together as a squad.”
Team selection for the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup will take place later this year and performances across Suncorp Super Netball, the Australian Netball Championships, the National Netball Championships and squad training camps will play a role in ongoing assessment and development.
This training camp was set to include the Australian Development Squad, but Suncorp Super Netball schedules and the risk of border closures has meant that squad will remain within their Suncorp Super Netball environments and will reconvene following the 2021 season.
However, Australian Development Squad coaches, Julie Fitzgerald, Jenny Borlase, Elissa Kent and Bec Bulley, will still attend the 21 and Under camp to assist with specialist coaching.
Byrne and an athlete will be available to local media on Tuesday afternoon. Details of this media opportunity will be made available on Monday.
