Netball Australia has today revealed the fixture for the 2022 National Netball Championships, which will take place from 19-24 April at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre.
The National Netball Championships will mark a significant milestone in the return of the competition, following the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Netball Championships have proven to be an important step in Netball Australia’s pathway, with many of the Origin Australian Diamonds representing their state or territory in the event.
First contested in 1985, the annual tournament provides emerging talent from across the country the opportunity to represent their respective state or territory and compete for the championship title in 17/U and 19/U age groups.
Netball Australia Executive General Manager of Performance Stacey West expressed her joy to see National Netball Championships back on court for 2022.
“This fixture will provide an array of back-to-back competition for the netball community, serving up 56 games featuring rising stars from across the country,” West said.
“It is a thrill to see the opportunity for these athletes, umpires and coaches to come together and be immersed in the high-performance environment.”
As hosts of the event, Netball Tasmania CEO Mitchell Coulson said the Tasmanian netball community is behind the event and ready to witness the national talent.
“The whole Tasmanian netball community is absolutely thrilled to be hosting the nationals this year,” Coulson said.
“It’s been a long time coming but we can’t wait to see all states and territories take to the court in April.”
The 2022 National Netball Championships will be available to watch live, on-demand and free via Kayo Freebies, as part of the new era of netball on Fox Sports.
“Kayo is the new home of netball, and we are thrilled to provide a platform for the National Netball Championship to be watched through the Kayo Freebies platform,” Kayo Marketing Director Kim McConnie said.
“Bringing exposure to the pathways to the elite level of sport is an important priority for Kayo, and so to allow fans to stream the championships alongside premier competitions like the Suncorp Super Netball series and the Australian Diamonds’ international pursuits is what makes Kayo the true home of netball.”
Eighteen umpires from across the country have been selected to umpire the 2022 National Netball Championships.
As part of Netball Australia’s commitment to the next generation of Australia’s high-performance umpires, the umpires will be supported by an Allocations Panel, led by Stacey Campton, Development Coach, Performance Umpiring.
“These Championships provide a competition base for future national and international umpires to springboard from,” Campton said.
“The intense week of games, rules discussions, one on one coaching and umpire team development has provided the inspiration for some of the best netball umpires in the world to grow from, and it is great to have this competition back in the calendar.”
