South Australia has claimed the 2019 One Netball Marie Little Shield title, defeating Victoria 21 to 18 at the Queensland State Netball Centre.
The Victorian side came out strong grabbing the first three goals of the match and looking like they might put on a dominant display, but the South Australian Rubies dug deep to keep their gold medal dream alive and managed to come away with a three-goal victory.
Earlier in the day New South Wales won bronze after defeating Queensland.
The One Netball Marie Little Shield is an annual tournament that provides women with an intellectual disability the chance to compete at a national level.
Named after disability netball pioneer, Marie Little OAM, the competition which is proudly supported by Netball Australia’s Community and Social Inclusion partner Australia Post, sees teams from six states and territories compete.
South Australian coach Tricia Crockford is thrilled to see her the team rewarded with a gold medal after being runner’s up last year.
“To win gold is absolutely amazing - I obviously coach these girls but this is for them,” said Crockford.
“Their hard work, their determination, their commitment, their passion, their love for the sport – this is what it’s all about.”
“I’ve spent six long years working with them and watching them grow - helping them to be the best and to ultimately help them achieve gold.”
Australia Post Head of Community Relations, Nicky Tracey, said it was great to see so much talent showcased throughout the One Netball Marie Little Shield tournament.
“Australia Post is proud to play a part in building more connected communities, where everyone feels they belong, are valued and respected. We believe an inclusive netball environment improves attitudes and behaviours towards people from diverse backgrounds, and importantly, builds empathy and understanding.”
“The Marie Little Shield has a wonderful opportunity to bring participants and their families together for a truly memorable experience here in Brisbane this weekend”.
