An epic week of netball action from the country’s best up-and-coming athletes came to a head on Sunday.
All eight states and territories descended on Frankston’s Jubilee Park, the backdrop to what was a fantastic week of competition.
South Australia and New South Wales were crowned champions with the South Aussies claiming the 17 & Under title while NSW took out gold in the 19 & Under competition.
Victoria took out an extra time showdown for bronze against NSW in the 17s and while Western Australia charged in the third quarter of their 19s clash with Victoria to walk away with a bronze of their own.
KELLY DOMINATES 17s
South Australian Jemma Kelly was named the 17s Series MVP as well as MVP for the Grand Final.
The defender’s presence throughout the week put pressure on the opposition and she stood up when her team needed it.
The South Australian captain led by example and was a key cog in her state’s gold-medal victory.
It was the icing on the cake of a successful campaign for South Australia who finished the week undefeated, with the side winning a nail-biting grand final against WA by two goals 30 to 28.
NSW SWEEP 19s
NSW were slick from the start of the week to the end, winning all nine of their matches in the 19s.
Defender Frederika Schneideman made her mark, forcing her opposition into giving up the ball.
The pressure cooker Schneideman created enabling NSW to turn over plenty of ball.
The defender was named Series MVP for the 19s while her teammate Hope White stood out in the Grand Final.
White was prolific in wing attack for NSW against Queensland, the midcourter had the ball on a string throughout the match, driving hard to circle edge.
NSW’s dominance led by White was on show with the side defeating Queensland in the clash by 10 goals 42 to 32.
BATTLE FOR BRONZE
The battle for bronze was hotly contested on Sunday with Victoria featuring in both matches determined to finish on the podium.
First up the 17s claimed the gold medal in a captivating match against NSW that was forced into extra time.
Goal attack Amalani Fauonuku was on fire for VIC scoring 24 of her side’s 47 goals while down the other end of the court Matilda Percival led the charge for NSW with 32 goals of her side’s 44.
While grabbing bronze in the 17s VIC fell just short in the 19s with WA putting on a powerful display in the third quarter to snare the bronze.
Every other quarter of the match was even with neither side able to establish a lead on the scoreboard.
WA’s shooting partnership of Aisha Morcombe and Georgie Cleaver were strong in attack throughout the match.
VIC did everything they could to get itself back in the game after the third quarter slip changes in their defensive end but it wasn’t enough to bring back the margin established by WA in the third term.
