Netball Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of respected business and community leader the Hon Gabrielle Upton to the Board.
Board Chair Wendy Archer AM said Ms Upton would bring valuable governance experience, ideas and a passion for the sport to the Board.
Ms Upton, who has been chosen to fill the appointed director vacancy, was the NSW Government’s first female Attorney General and served in five other senior ministerial portfolios, including as Minister for Sport.
Ms Upton has broad governance experience as a non-director and has worked in the legal and financial sectors in Australia and overseas. She was previously the Deputy Chancellor of the University of New South Wales.
“I welcome Gabrielle to our Board as we continue to grow the sport’s participation past one million players and build on the outstanding on-court achievements and the strong leadership securing the sport’s financial future,’’ Ms Archer said.
“Gabrielle Upton is a trailblazer and has strongly championed women’s leadership in politics and the broader community. Her commitment and drive will ensure netball continues to bring communities together across Australia.’’
Ms Upton said: “Netball was my first sport because it was fun, a good way to keep fit and I liked being part of a team”. It’s not surprising that netball is still the number one participation sport for women and girls.''
“There are also real and visible pathways to international success for our women and girls with our Origin Australian Diamonds reigning World and Commonwealth Champions. I look forward to contributing my experience and skills to grow netball’s opportunities for everyone."
