Understanding Retention
Understanding why players stay, leave and return is an important first step in improving player retention.
Netball Australia commissioned a national program of research to better understand participation, retention, dropout and re-engagement. The research included player registration analysis, surveys of more than 4,600 current and former players, interviews with players who had left the sport, and discussions with clubs achieving high player retention rates.
The findings highlight four key ingredients that influence long-term participation:
- Friends - strong social connections and positive team environments
- Fun - enjoyable and quality experiences
- Flexibility - participation options that fit changing lifestyles and commitments
- Belonging - environments where participants feel welcomed, valued and included
