The heat is turning up with blockbuster clashes across the weekend, and it doesn’t get bigger than this.
Two unbeaten heavyweights. One statement clash.
The Melbourne Vixens vs Adelaide Thunderbirds.
The reigning premiers and ladder-leading Thunderbirds have both stormed out of the gates, sitting 5–0 to start the season.
But this weekend one undefeated run will come to an end.
Will the Vixens continue their title defence in style or will the Thunderbirds put them in their place?
These sides don’t just play, they battle.
Their last meeting was 2025's nail-biting Minor Semi Final with the Vixens getting the job done by two goals.
This weekend promises to deliver another exhilarating clash, both teams escaped Round 5 with wins, but neither was flawless only adding fuel to the fire.
The Thunderbirds will be determined to put last year's Minor Semi Final loss behind them when they face the Vixens this week.
With the stage set for a statement performance, all eyes will be on the playmakers who can define it.
Georgie Horjus heads into the game for the Thunderbirds in red-hot form, having rotated from wing attack into goal attack to sink the GIANTS in Round 5.
This week she’ll line up against the likes of Kate Eddy and Jo Weston.
Both Vixens defenders will be laser-focused on cutting her drives to shut her down regardless of what bib she dons.
Then there’s Elmeré van der Berg who leads the league for goals with 239.
Rudi Ellis and Emily Mannix will go up against the South African star throughout the match and will need to work off the body to steal possession before it reaches her.
Down the other end of the court the head-to-head between Shamera Sterling-Humphrey and Sophie Garbin will be one to watch.
Sterling-Humphrey is a defensive livewire, leading the league in defensive rebounds and deflections.
But Garbin’s clinical accuracy means if the ball arrives to her safely it’s almost certainly going through the ring setting Sterling-Humphrey and co a tough job.
But if any defensive unit is up for halting the Vixens, it’s the Thunderbirds.
Garbin has been a standout for the Vixens this year.
Latanya Wilson is the league's intercept queen, and she'll have two tasks at the front of mind.
One, nullify the impact of Kiera Austin.
Two, intercept the ball.
Austin is the barometer for the Vixens, when she’s on fire, so are the Vixens.
The goaler leads the competition for Suncorp Super Shots with 24, her composure under pressure will be key if the Vixens are to win this clash.
Then there’s the midcourt which could make or break it.
The battle of the Kates.
Kate Moloney and Kate Heffernan will bring their relentless energy to this weekend’s showdown.
The middies both put their body on the line to win back the ball every chance they get.
To start the season, Moloney has tallied six intercepts and five deflections while Heffernan has five intercepts and 13 deflections.
Heffernan will be crucial in the midcourt for the Thunderbirds this weekend.
Whichever Kate gains the upper hand could control the tempo of the match and ultimately influence the result.
The Vixens will have the home crowd behind them every step of the way, but history says they shouldn’t feel too comfortable.
The Thunderbirds upset the Vixens the last time they met at John Cain Arena and with top spot on the line, they won’t fear stepping into the Vixens’ den.
REST OF THE WEEKEND
Round 6 doesn’t stop there, the rivalries keep coming.
Beginning with the next chapter of a longstanding feud between the Queensland Firebirds and NSW Swifts.
Both teams will be desperate to bounce back from losses in Round 5 and snatch their opportunity to return to the winner’s list.
Then the Melbourne Mavericks face the Fever as underdogs.
But the Mavs will thrive with their backs against the wall and a win against one of the top contenders would send a serious message to the competition.
The Mavs face an in-form West Coast Fever this week.
Then to close the round the GIANTS will host the Sunshine Coast Lightning at Ken Rosewall Arena.
The GIANTS fell just short of victory last weekend but with everything finally starting to click this match could be a pivotal turning point in their season.
Likewise, the Lightning need to win to stay a competitive threat this season.
They’re sitting just outside the top four but a loss to the GIANTS could prove costly at the pointy end of the season.
