The Sunshine Coast Lightning overcame a shaky start to edge ahead early in the opening quarter, capitalising on a series of Swifts errors to establish an 8-5 lead midway through the term. Donnell Wallam was clinical in her 50th Super Netball appearance, shooting perfectly under the post despite some questionable delivery into the circle.
The Swifts gradually worked their way back into the contest, tightening up defensively and finding more rhythm through the efforts of Grace Whyte, who was outstanding across the court. Coach Briony Akle called a timeout with the margin sitting at one goal and the Power Five period looming.
Whyte nailed the first Super Shot of the match to hand the Swifts a three-goal buffer, but the Lightning responded calmly by backing single-point opportunities to reel the margin back in.
In a tightly contested finish to the term, the Swifts held a narrow 17-16 lead at quarter-time.
The second quarter continued at the same relentless intensity as the first, with both sides throwing themselves into every contest as bodies repeatedly hit the floor. Lightning coach Belinda Reynolds voiced her frustrations over her sideâs discipline, with the visitors conceding 24 penalties in the opening term alone.
In her 150th Super Netball game Sarah Klau produced one of the moments of the quarter early, reading the play brilliantly to snatch a clean intercept in front of Cara Koenen. Despite the Swiftsâ defensive pressure, the contest remained goal-for-goal for much of the term.
The injection of Paige Hadley, just 10-and-a-half weeks after the birth of her son Tully, immediately lifted the Swifts. Her energy around the court sparked the home side as they opened up a three-goal advantage midway through the quarter. However, the Lightning hit back through an intercept from Karin Burger that brought scores level again and forced a Swifts timeout.
Whyte continued her impressive first half with a second Super Shot, while the Swiftsâ defensive end worked tirelessly to slow the Lightning attack. Hadley made Liz Watson work for every possession, and when the visitors forced a turnover late in the term, Klau quickly won it back.
In another tight finish, it was Nweke who steadied the home side with a clean shot on the buzzer to head into the break with a slender one-goal lead.
The Swifts carried their momentum into the third quarter, with Nweke exploding out of the halftime break and leading the charge in attack. Playing with growing confidence, the home side settled into their rhythm and began to take control of the contest, capitalising on repeated Lightning mistakes.
The visitorsâ ball security became a major concern, with seven unforced turnovers proving costly as the Swifts punished errors through clean transition play. Courtney Bruce also found herself under pressure defensively, racking up 18 penalties as the home side continued to dictate terms.
The Swifts pushed their lead out to five late in the quarter before closing with a dominant 18-12 term to take a commanding 52-45 advantage into the final quarter.
The home side refused to let up in the final quarter, continuing their dominance as the Lightning struggled to find any momentum. The decision to bench Karin Burger proved costly for the visitors, with the Swifts taking full control of the contest.
Ken Rosewall Arena erupted when Whyte nailed another Super Shot, while Tayla Fraser ran rampant as the home side piled on the pressure.
A dominant 18-11 final quarter sealed an emphatic 70-56 win for the Swifts.
Swifts coach Briony Akle was full of praise post-match, hailing her sideâs effort across the court after a strong week on the track.
âVery pleased and very proud (of that win). Weâve had a big week of training and to come through with a performance like that, all over the court, yeah â very proud,â Akle said.
She highlighted the focus on defensive cohesion and intent that underpinned the performance.
âAll week we have worked on energy shifting and getting into place really quickly in terms of effective position to be able to see ball. Weâve certainly worked on more unit work and working together to be able to gain ball off strong defensive hands out the front.â
Akle also paid tribute to Paige Hadley, who made a remarkable return to Super Netball just 10.5 weeks after giving birth.
âThe effort for her to even get back. The determination in her just as an athlete, as a person, and to do anything for the red dress. For her minutes, she did an amazing job.â
Lightning coach Belinda Reynolds felt the final score didnât fully reflect the contest, but admitted her side was again unable to sustain their performance across four quarters.
âI donât think the score reflects the game, but I think we were obviously trying to hunt them down in that last quarter,â Reynolds said.
âThe disappointing thing is it replicated for us last weekâs game. Didnât capitalise off things in the first quarter, then got back in the game in the second quarter and then after half time we dropped our conversion rates, which was disappointing.â
