Netball Australia’s First Nations Director Professor Cheryl Kickett-Tucker AM has been reappointed to the Board for a three-year term.
A highly respected Wadjuk Noongar Traditional Owner, Professor Kickett-Tucker joined the Netball Australia Board in 2023 on a one-year term.
She is a Professor at Curtin University’s School of Education, a researcher, author, youth sporting coach and public speaker with a passion for community, health and sport.
In 2020, Professor Kickett-Tucker was recognised for significant service to tertiary education and the Aboriginal community when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Netball Australia Chair Liz Ellis AO was delighted to announce Professor Kickett-Tucker had been reappointed for a three-year term.
“Cheryl is a respected community leader and advocate for First Nations people, and she has made a significant contribution to the Netball Australia Board over the past 12 months,” Ms Ellis said.
“We want more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and players at every level of our game, and we want more First Nations voices leading our game.
“Cheryl’s reappointment ensures the voices of First Nations peoples are heard at the Board level, across our organisation and throughout the sport.”
Professor Kickett-Tucker said she would continue to use her knowledge and experience to make a difference in her role with Netball Australia.
“I am honoured to continue serving the Indigenous netball community with my recent reappointment as a Netball Australia board member,” Professor Kickett-Tucker said.
“My commitment lies in strengthening grassroots connections within our sport. It's imperative that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netball voices are not only heard but acted upon, empowering their journey to be 'black, loud, and proud' as we celebrate NAIDOC 2024 and beyond.
“Together, I urge the wider netball family to dedicate their hearts and minds to advancing our shared passion for netball. Let us foster a spirit of humanity that inspires action within our netball community towards achieving equity, equality, compassion, and justice for Australia’s First Peoples. Through these efforts, we will all share in greatness.”
