Netball Australia has today launched its new National Volunteer Action Plan, a coordinated three-year roadmap designed to strengthen, support and modernise the volunteer experience across every level of the sport.
Launched in National Volunteer Week, the Plan recognises volunteers as central to the success and sustainability of netball in Australia, with a 250,000-strong volunteer ecosystem supporting the delivery of participation opportunities in clubs and associations nationwide.
With over one million Australians participating in netball each year and participation growth increasing by over 60,000 since 2021, the new Action Plan is expected to positively impact hundreds of thousands of volunteers and community members across the country.
The Plan represents one of the first nationally aligned volunteer strategies developed specifically for netball in Australia.
It outlines a shared national approach to improving volunteer experiences by reducing administrative burden, modernising systems and resources, strengthening recognition programs and creating safer, more inclusive environments for volunteers.
Developed in collaboration with state and territory Member Organisations, the Australian Sports Commission and insights gathered through the National Volunteer Resource Audit, the Action Plan aligns with broader national priorities to support and sustain Australia’s sport volunteer workforce.
Netball Australia Executive General Manager – Netball, Megan Simpson said the Plan represented an important investment in the people who power the sport at grassroots level.
“Volunteers are the heartbeat of netball communities across Australia. They create the environments that allow people to connect, participate and belong,” Simpson said.
“This Action Plan is about supporting our people with the tools and systems they need to thrive, while ensuring volunteering in netball is flexible, rewarding and inclusive for everyone.”
Simpson said the initiative would help position netball for continued growth while strengthening the sport’s community foundations.
“As participation continues to grow, it’s critical we evolve the way we support volunteers so they can continue delivering positive experiences in communities across the country,” she said.
“By investing in volunteers, we’re investing in the future of netball – building stronger communities, fostering belonging, and ensuring our sport remains accessible and sustainable for generations to come.”
Key priorities of the National Volunteer Action Plan include improving access to practical resources, simplifying volunteer processes, enhancing recognition initiatives and increasing consistency in volunteer support across the national netball system.
The Plan also reinforces netball’s commitment to creating safe and supportive environments where volunteers can contribute in ways that suit their skills, interests and availability.
