The NSW Swifts wasted no time asserting themselves, opening the scoring inside the first minute before capitalising on a Sunshine Coast error to surge to an early 3-0 lead, courtesy of a brilliant play from Teigan O’Shannassy.
Courtney Bruce quickly proved a turning point for the Lightning. The home side settled, tightened defensively, and worked back into the contest, levelling the scores midway through the quarter. With star power on display at both ends, the contest became a high-quality arm wrestle. Slick ball movement fed Donnell Wallam under the post, putting the visitors on the back foot.
Locked at 11-11 heading into the Power Five, Briony Akle called a tactical timeout, urging her side to back their game. The restart paid dividends as the Swifts forced a turnover, before Wallam landed awkwardly on her heavily strapped right knee. Housby broke the deadlock in the Power Five with a Suncorp Super Shot, sparking a decisive late surge. The Swifts finished the quarter strongly, stringing together five unanswered goals to take a 17-14 lead into the first break.
Housby continued her influence early in the second quarter, but the Lightning responded quickly. The visitors pushed out to a four-goal lead as O’Shannassy continued her dominant form and Wallam secured key rebounds. With the margin at three, Lightning coach Belinda Reynolds called a tactical timeout, prompting midcourt changes.
The Swifts also made a change, bringing Maddy Proud on for Tayla Fraser, but the home side began to lift. Improved attacking composure saw them close the gap, trailing 30-27 at the Power Five siren. Defensive pressure from the Lightning ramped up late, forcing the Swifts into cross-court options. Karin Burger and Bruce collected crucial rebounds, while an out-of-court error allowed the Lightning to draw level inside the final three minutes. After another turnover exchange, the Lightning claimed the quarter 19-15 to lead 33-32 at half-time.
The Lightning struck first in the third term, Liz Watson continued to drive the home attack, and by midway through the quarter the Lightning led by three, with Watson tallying 13 goal assists and two deflections.
In search of a spark, the Swifts brought Gina Crampton on for Grace Whyte. Crampton made an immediate impact, but Bruce matched her, keeping Lightning in control. Koenen’s freedom in the circle helped the home side maintain a three-goal buffer with five minutes to play.
Late in the quarter, Akle made a bold tactical move, removing Housby and bringing Whyte onto goal attack. The switch paid instant dividends as Whyte sank back-to-back super shots, reducing the deficit to just one.
Despite trailing by as many as five, the Swifts finished the quarter strongly, trailing 52–50 heading into the final term.
Maddy Turner finally entered for the visitors to start the fourth quarter. Efficiency proved key with the Lightning converting 83 per cent from gain-to-goal compared to Swifts’ 60 per cent.
Bruce continued to feel the pressure in defence as the Swifts closed within two. Housby returned to the circle, and control swung.
A held ball call against the Lightning on the final Power Five gave the Swifts a chance, and Housby delivered with a super shot to take a one-goal lead. The Lightning responded immediately, and with 2:41 remaining, the Swifts called a tactical timeout.
In a frantic final passage, Housby missed a Super Shot; the rebound fell to the Lightning, who converted and then worked the ball through midcourt to wind down the clock, securing a one point victory.
