The race to finals is heating up.
There’s no margin for error, we saw that last weekend. Games were there to be won but were fumbled because even a moments lapse can cost everything.
The Swifts and Lightning are two teams who let opportunities slip and will go head-to-head this Saturday as every match starts to become a must win.
Both remain mathematically alive in the finals race, but the window is closing fast. One more misstep, and it could slam shut.
Recent clashes between the two have gone down to the wire and with the stakes higher than ever, expect another thriller.
They come into Round 9 Priceline Pharmacy Women’s Health Round almost inseparable.
Both sides have claimed 13 quarters this season and boast similar shooting accuracy.
The Swifts have a slight edge at 84 per cent to the Lightning’s 82 per cent but Lightning sit one game ahead of them on the ladder and are within striking distance of the top four.
Lightning are fighting to get back into the top.
For the Swifts, the absence of Helen Housby has opened the door for rising talent Grace Whyte, who’s stepped up as a genuine playmaker.
But she’ll face a relentless test in Karin Burger, the defender’s pressure and ability to shut down space could prove decisive especially during the Power Five.
In the shooting circle, it doesn’t get much bigger than Grace Nweke up against Courtney Bruce, while at the other end Sarah Klau takes on Donnell Wallam who looms as a Suncorp Super Shot threat with the confidence to shoot no matter the pressure.
Through the middle, expect fireworks.
Liz Watson and Maddy Proud are set to go toe-to-toe in a battle built on grit, endurance and pure will.
Watson has racked up 203 feeds, and 113 goal assists this season, while Proud sits at 155 and 88, with Whyte taking on a larger share of the Swifts’ feeding load.
There’s one stat that could decide it all this weekend.
The gain to goal conversion.
Both sides will need to capitalise more on their gains this week.
Last week both teams struggled to capitalise on gains, the Swifts at 44 per cent and Lightning at 55.
Clean transition and clinical finishing will be a non-negotiable when they meet on Saturday night with the pressure sitting on each individual player to get the ball from one end of the court to the other.
Which team has what it really takes to be a contender in 2026?
We’re about to find out.
THE REST OF PRICELINE PHARMACY WOMEN’S HEALTH ROUND
The round begins on Friday night with the West Coast Fever hosting an in-form Thunderbirds with second spot up for grabs.
On Sunday, the GIANTS face the Mavericks. The Mavs are fighting to hold onto a top-four position, while the GIANTS are desperate to finally break through after another near miss.
Then, the reigning premiers meet the Firebirds. The Firebirds remain in the finals hunt and will be out to capitalise on a Vixens side that showed vulnerability last weekend.
