It was an even and hard-fought opening quarter in Perth, with milestone woman Romelda Aiken-George suiting up for her 250th national league game. Fever struck first, but the Firebirds quickly responded, with Mary Cholhok finding early rhythm to help the visitors edge ahead.
The home side worked their way back into the contest, levelling the scores and prompting a tactical timeout from coach Dan Ryan, who made the call to send Alice Teague-Neeld to the bench.
Queensland’s defence did well to disrupt the connection between Aiken-George and Sasha Glasgow, while neither side was able to capitalise from long range in a super shot free quarter until the buzzer, with scores locked at 15-15 at the first break.
That intensity carried into the second term, with Macy Gardner making an immediate impact through a massive intercept to hand early momentum to the Firebirds. Despite some shaky moments under the post, Te Paea Selby-Rickett steadied to convert.
It was a battle of second chances, with offensive rebound piling up for both sides. The Firebirds were able to create a buffer, opening up a three-goal lead midway through the quarter as Gardner continued her quality performance with another gain.
Fever looked to shift momentum with changes, bringing on Olivia Wilkinson for her first appearance of the season, while Glasgow was sent to the bench. With little separating the sides heading into the Power Five, Wilkinson made an immediate statement, nailing back-to-back super shots to lift the home crowd and stay within striking distance.
After trailing for much of the quarter, the home side surged late, finishing strongly to overturn the deficit and take a 32-29 lead into the half-time break.
There were no changes to open the second half, but it was the West Coast Fever who quickly took control, with Wilkinson continuing her standout impact and Player of the Match Zoe Cransberg driving the side brilliantly through centre.
With Alice Teague-Neeld being carefully managed and minutes also restricted for Glasgow, Fever were forced to adjust their rotations, but it did little to halt their momentum. The home side pushed out to their biggest lead of the match, opening up a five-goal buffer as the Firebirds began to fall behind the pace.
Struggling to keep in touch, Firebirds coach Kiri Wills called a late timeout and urged her side to take advantage of the Super Shot. However, when play resumed it was Fever who struck again, with Cransberg collecting her second intercept before Wilkinson capped it off with another super shot.
With Macy Gardner less influential through the middle as the quarter wore on, Fever continued to build, surging clear to take a commanding 12-goal lead into the final change.
The final quarter opened in a goal-for-goal arm wrestle, with the Firebirds unable to make meaningful inroads despite matching it early. In a bid to spark something in attack, Cholhok was benched, with Elsa Sif Sandholt introduced under the post.
Sandholt made an immediate impact, slotting four consecutive goals to trim the margin and force Fever into a timeout as they looked to regain control. Still, the home side held an eight-goal buffer as the siren signalled the final Power Five.
The Firebirds surged late, closing to within five goals with just over two minutes to play and threatening a comeback. A crucial turnover presented Fever with a chance to steady, but Aiken-George was unable to secure the rebound, keeping the visitors in the contest.
What followed was a frantic finish, with turnovers at both ends and neither side able to fully capitalise until the dying moments. Despite the late pressure, Fever held firm to secure a 58-54 victory.
