Netball Australia is pleased to confirm the appointment of a new First Nations director, welcoming academic and community practitioner Professor Cheryl Kickett-Tucker AM to its Board.
Professor Kickett-Tucker is a highly-respected Wadjuk Noongar Traditional Owner, researcher, author, youth sporting coach and public speaker.
A Professor at Curtin University’s School of Education, Professor Kickett-Tucker has a passion for community, health and sport.
In 2020, she was recognised for significant service to tertiary education and the Aboriginal community when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
As an academic researcher and a community development practitioner, Professor Kickett-Tucker has proven experience in bringing communities together with all levels of government.
Her love of community sport is evident in her work, including founding a basketball lifestyle program for children who have potential but limited opportunities to enhance their wellbeing. She also serves as a Director at Basketball WA.
Professor Kickett-Tucker is excited to continue using her knowledge and experience to make a difference in this new role with Netball Australia.
“I am thrilled to join Netball Australia’s Board. I hope to be an approachable face for First Nations people on the Board, so they’ve got a connection to that top level,” Professor Kickett-Tucker said.
“I will also help provide more cultural security in Netball Australia’s processes and procedures to aid in the interaction between grassroots and the Board. After all, it’s the people we ultimately serve.”
Netball Australia Chair, Wendy Archer, welcomed the appointment of Professor Kickett-Tucker to the Board.
“Cheryl brings a wealth of community sport and development experience to our Board,” Ms Archer said.
“We’re very excited to welcome her to the Board and to have her expertise as we continue to build on Netball Australia’s pledge to First Nations people, as part of the Declaration of Commitment to listen, learn and change.”
Professor Cheryl Kickett-Tucker’s first Board meeting will be mid-May.
