Shirley Hunt (nee James) is one of handful of Tasmanians to play netball for Australia.
While she played much of her early netball for the Tasmanian schoolgirls teams in the centre court, she was identified as having greater potential as a shooter.
Hunt’s international career covered Australia’s three-Test series against New Zealand in 1960 which Australia won 2-1 after losing the opening match in Adelaide.
Hunt captained Tasmania on four occasions at the national championships over a 10-year period.
After retiring as a player Hunt later coached and managed Tasmanian teams at several national championship tournaments and was appointed the state’s Director of Coaching in 1987.
Her brief was to improve the standard of coaching across Tasmania, which she achieved as the number of qualified coaches across the state rose from 43 to over 1000 by the end of 1989.
