It was a memorable international debut for the talented defender from country Victoria, named Player of the Match in her first Test against New Zealand in the 1996 Milo Cup.
Liz Boniello (nee Taverner) was an invitee to the Australian squad in 1993 under then coach Joyce Brown before being officially part of the squad the following year.
Her international career was halted when Boniello underwent two knee reconstructions, meaning she was unable to be considered for the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia and the 1999 Netball World Cup in New Zealand.
She made a comeback to the Australian team in the early 2000’s with her last appearance coming against South Africa as part of the 2001 Tri-Nations Series in Canberra.
Boniello played for the Melbourne Phoenix in the Commonwealth Bank trophy between 1997 and 2003, captaining the side in 1999 and being co-captain from 2000 until her retirement after leading Phoenix to back-to-back titles.
She played in four CBT premierships for Phoenix and was named at goal defence in the 2003 Team of the Year.
In 2008 Boniello was named by Netball Victoria as a Legend of the Game.
