Netball Australia is pleased to announce the umpires selected for the 2018/19 Emerging Talent Umpire Program.
The Emerging Talent Umpire Program is the first tier on the national High Performance Umpire Pathway, focusing on the development of Australia’s emerging umpires by enabling them to undertake professional development and identified training activities under the guidance, and with the support, of both Netball Australia and their Member Organisation.
Netball Australia Program Manager – Workforce Officials Development, Sarah Bland said the umpires included in the emerging talent program were selected by the National Umpire Coaches off the back of the 2018 17/U & 19/U National Netball Championships and Deakin University Australian Netball League.
“The umpires are identified as those having the attributes to learn and develop to take the next step and umpire at the highest level.
“These are the umpires that have the ambition and desire to officiate in Suncorp Super Netball and international netball games. This program gives them the guidance and support to make that a reality.
“We are pleased to welcome the following umpires into the emerging talent program – Justin Barnes (VIC), Tayla Favell (NSW), Rebecca Ferguson (SA), Rochelle McKee (WA), Sarah Slattery (ACT), Georgina Sulley-Beales (SA) and Tamara Welsford (NSW),” Bland said.
A first-time member of the program, Rochelle McKee said she it was a grateful for the opportunity to refine her umpiring skills.
“I’ve been umpiring now for nearly three years. When I was growing up I umpired for pocket money as playing always took priority for me. I’d been considering umpiring for a while in my last years playing in WANL and decided to give it a crack after I had finished playing.
“This year I’ve taken things one step at a time. Nationals was my first event and my goal was to grow a little each day and learn as much as I could. During ANL I focused on improving some technical areas.
“Being selected for the Emerging Talent Program was unexpected but something I’d aimed to work towards achieving. The camp was fantastic; being exposed to different styles of play and learning from the passion and knowledge from other player and umpire coaches, McKee said.
The Emerging Talent Umpire Program will run until the conclusion of the 2019 17/U & 19/U National Netball Championship and Deakin University Australian Netball League Season.
