Healthy habits for small heroes

Netball Australia is encouraging parents and NetSetGO Centres to help Suncorp NetSetGO participants develop healthy habits, in partnership with healthdirect.

In 2018, every Suncorp NetSetGO participant pack will include a Healthy Habits for Small Heroes activity booklet that contains activities aimed at helping kids to develop healthy behaviours, with additional information for parents and coaches available through netsetgo.asn.au.

The activity book features fun activities for kids that educate on healthy living, including tracking water intake and personal hygiene, the importance of stretching and warming up/cooling down and what are roadblocks to a good night’s sleep.

Resources available online for parents, caregivers and coaches include fact sheets with tips for encouraging healthy eating, hydration, dental health and sleep.

To promote hydration, each Suncorp NetSetGO inclusion program participant will receive a drink bottle after registering for the program.

Suncorp NetSetGO is Netball Australia’s only junior participation program, with 80,000 children aged between 5 – 10 years old registered per annum.

Netball Australia’s Executive General Manager of Sport Andrew Collins said, “as a National Sports Organisation with a vast community footprint, we have the ability to communicate directly with children, their parents and coaches around the country.

“Participating in sport goes hand in hand with living a healthy lifestyle. By integrating health information, our program can assist in building stronger, more resilient communities, with positive health outcomes,” he explained.

General Manager of Consumer Health Services at healthdirect, Andrew Bryant, says the NetSetGo program is spreading an important health message.

“The information and advice supporting this campaign draws upon healthdirect’s consumer-friendly resources to promote healthy and active lifestyles for children. It’s great to be able to provide access to practical, safe and trusted resources through this partnership with NetSetGO and help children, their parents and caregivers, learn healthy habits for life.”

healthdirect, www.healthdirect.gov.au, is a government-funded service and is the most popular Australian health information website.

Further Healthy Habits resources will be released in the coming months. Stay tuned on Netball Australia’s Facebook page, and the Suncorp NetSetGO website for more.
