If you’re still craving a fix of international netball, then make sure you’re tuning into this weekend’s FAST5 Netball World Series from New Zealand to watch our Aussie FAST5 Flyers in action.
It’s exciting times the Flyers, who are looking to go one step better in this year’s tournament and bring home the gold medal.
It has been a sensational year for Australian netball, especially the Diamonds, and the FAST5 Flyers are determined to keep that winning culture in place and finish off the year by becoming the first Australian team to win this format of our great game.
Coach Jane Searle has been determined to learn from the lessons of last year’s campaign, where the Flyers fell short in the Grand Final against New Zealand.
Selecting three-point shooters has been a mantra for Jane and the selectors myself, Annie Sargeant and Michelle Wilkins.
We believe the team that’s headed across to Auckland is the strongest, most experienced and best suited to this form of the game Australia has ever chosen.
The team is superbly led by two absolute professionals in Erin Bell and Clare McMeniman. Both have Diamonds experience behind them and also had consistent seasons for their respective teams in the ANZ Championship.
I know that both Erin and Clare are champing at the bit to play their role as co-captains and they understand the need to lead as well as perform.
The two coaches, Jane Searle and her assistant Jane Woodlands-Thompson, have already shown their ability to combine beautifully in this form of the game and have taken their tactics to a whole new level this year.
So get ready for some surprises; excitement combined with our distinctive Aussie style of hard one-on-one defence, fast attacking drives and slick ball handling.
All are ready to take on the challenge of taking their games to a new level, including embracing the high standards of this team.
Ash will enjoy being injury free and giving the national selectors something to think about with her game that is so suited to this format. Her ability to cover the court and her creative playing style will be tough for the opposition to counter.
Kate Moloney is an exciting young talent who has been knocking on the door of the Diamonds squad. We feel she is also well suited also to this form of netball and will relish her opportunity to pit herself against different international styles.
For those that have not previously watched this form of the game you will be treated to some superb long-range shooting, more space available on the court with only five players per team on at any time and rolling substitutes.
It is fast and fun packed and both crowd and athletes responding to the music that rocks the stadium!
I can’t wait and I’ll be cheering hard for the Aussie Fast5 Flyers!
