The 12 players chosen will be announced by Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander in Sydney next Wednesday with this Sunday’s ANZ Championship Grand Final the last opportunity for several squad members to impress selectors.
The Netball World Cup is returning to Australia for the first time in 24 years with the Diamonds eager to replicate the feats of the 1991 side by winning the title on home soil. Australia is also the defending champion, having won in 2011 at Singapore.
Alexander said the form of all players in the Diamonds squad this season had made the selection process tough.
“The great thing is everybody is pushing for their position in this team and you can see that. They are really trying to do the things that we’ve asked them to do,” Alexander said.
“Even outside the squad there are some players who are really pushing for selection. So there’s always big competition and that makes it very difficult. It’s about getting that right mix and combinations.”
Australia’s opening match of the Netball World Cup is against Trinidad & Tobago at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Friday, August 7.
