The Diamonds have spent the week at a squad training camp in Canberra and Alexander said every player returned from their six-week break in good physical shape to start preparing for the upcoming Real Insurance Netball Test Series.
“The girls really been very disciplined,” Alexander said while overseeing the squad’s last practice session for the week at Netball Australia’s Centre of Excellence.
“Physically they’re in great shape and that’s a credit to the girls. They’ve spent time in their home states doing some work before they came to camp.
“So really pleased with that from their point of view. It’s just getting our skills and teamwork right. That’s the work which has actually got to be done. The girls need to reconnect together, get that flow and movement and attacking flair back.”
The Diamonds held a match play session on Wednesday afternoon against Netball Australia’s Centre of Excellence team.
The Diamonds head to New Zealand on 28 September to prepare for the first Test of the Constellation Cup series against the Silver Ferns at Invercargill on 2 October.
Eleven of the squad were part of Australia’s triumphant Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow with defenders Rebecca Bulley and Clare McMeniman added following the retirement from international netball of Bianca Chatfield.
With less than a year to go before the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Alexander said the hunger to want to keep improving was motivating her squad more than ever.
“We’ve taken the message very clearly that we’ve got more to achieve,” Alexander declared.
“There’s things to improve on; we can’t rest on winning a (Commonwealth Games) gold medal. Really grateful for having that opportunity to represent our country and win and we’re loving that the fans love it to.
“But, at the end of the day, we’ve got more business to do.”
Tickets are still available to this year’s Real Insurance Netball Test Series matches in Melbourne (8 October) and Sydney (11 October) against the Silver Ferns and in Canberra (22 October) when the Diamonds take on England.
