Business end of the ANZ Championship season

ANZ Championship - 2nd Semi Final Melbourne Vixens v Queensland FirebirdsFor the second time in three years, the Melbourne Vixens will host the ANZ Championship Grand Final.

The season decider will be played in Melbourne on Sunday, 22 June with the venue, time and ticket details set to be confirmed following Monday night’s Preliminary Final between the Queensland Firebirds and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

ANZ-Championship-2014-Logo-GRAND-FINAL-50x20mmIt’s the third time that the Vixens have hosted the Grand Final. They won the title in 2009, defeating the Adelaide Thunderbirds, and were runners up in 2012, losing to the Magic.

The Firebirds, champions in 2011, are chasing their third Grand Final appearance in four seasons and coach Roselee Jencke said they are eager to bounce back from their Major Semi-Final defeat against the Melbourne Vixens.

“The girls are all in really good spirits and we are confident we can put out a really good performance next week and step out on the court and play our game,” Jencke said. Magic produced a timely form turnaround last weekend to eliminate the NSW Swifts from the premiership race in a stunning come-from-behind win in the Minor Semi-Final in Sydney.

The Magic, led by Australian coach Julie Fitzgerald, will be keen to continue that momentum and travel to Brisbane next Monday night and keep their title hopes alive.

The Firebirds have never lost to the Magic in Brisbane and have won the past two meetings between the two sides – both played in New Zealand.

They’ll also be keen to become the first team since 2008 to avoid being bundled out of the Finals in straight sets and also protect their unbeaten home court record in Finals.

For all the Grand Final information, make sure you visit after Monday night’s result to find out where you get your tickets.
