Bassett ready for Diamonds environment

2016 Diamonds Camp Weight Training Caitlin Bassett

Australian Diamonds shooter Caitlin Bassett says she is looking forward to getting back into the Diamonds team environment when the Netball Quad Series team re-join for pre-departure camp next week.

“I’ve been doing a lot of training by myself over here in Perth and I’m really excited about getting back on the netball court,” Bassett said.

“The majority of the group went to England at the start of the year, so it has been a very long time between tours. I’m definitely excited to get back into that team environment.”

Re-focussing existing Diamonds and introducing new squad members to the strong Diamonds ‘sisters’ culture is an important aspect of the upcoming team camp.

Bassett says this is particularly important following an ANZ Championship season where Diamonds teammates have become opponents on the court.

“One of the things we work really hard on at the Diamonds is passing our culture and our traditions down to the next group that are coming up,” she explained.

“We’re really lucky to have had both Steph (Wood) and Kristiana (Manu’a) over in the UK with us at the start of the year, so I think that will really make their transition for this tour really easy.

“That’s probably going to be one of the first things we do when we come into camp, is sit down and go over our values and behaviours and make sure everyone is on the same page before we get started.

“It will be great to get out some cobwebs over those few days at camp, really get back on the same page and build those friendships back up before we go into battle together as Diamonds.”

Named acting Vice-Captain for the Netball Quad Series, which begins on August 27 in New Zealand, Bassett says the leadership group will be looking to execute a similar leadership style to January’s England Tour.

“My leadership style is to really be myself and to be as open and as honest as I can be as a leader,” Bassett says

“It sometimes does add a little bit more pressure for you to perform consistently, but that is one of my goals anyway.

“I’m really excited about working with Clare (McMeniman) and Sharni (Layton) again and I think things went really smoothly in England and it’s definitely something we want to continue on this tour.”
