The Australians continue their unbeaten run in the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, however a phenomenal performance by Fiji held the reigning champions at bay in their closest game yet.
Still comfortable winners 71-32, the scoreline was a far cry from the big margins of the past two matches when Australia defeated Israel (123-6) and Namibia (91-17).
Fearless GK Raijieli Daveua held the Fijian team together, her extraordinary elevation resulting in some astounding interceptions against the 6 ft 5 shooter Kristina Brice.
Australian coach Carol Byers was impressed with the Fijians performance.
“They played really well. They got some intercepts and shot well and made us work really hard tonight,” Byers said.
The Fiji supporters sang their approval throughout the game from the stands, and Coach Unaisi Rokoura couldn’t be happier.
“I’m over the moon for these players. We played from the first quarter right to the end.”
