The stage is set for another blockbuster encounter between The Coffee Club Queensland Firebirds and the NSW Swifts, where they will once again meet in the Australian Conference Final.
In 2015 it was the Firebirds who triumphed over the Swifts, 55-44 in the Australian Conference Final, moving on to claim the Grand Final in thrilling style, with a one-goal win over the Swifts two weeks later.
The outcome of the Australian Conference Final will shape each team’s journey to the ANZ Championship Grand Final.
The Swifts are coming off a big 14-goal win over the Melbourne Vixens in the Australian Conference Elimination Final, the Firebirds fresh after a week off.
We’ve seen two close contests between the two sides already this season, both winning on their home courts. It was the Firebirds who claimed the 10-goal win in Round 5 and the Swifts a four-goal victory in Round 9. Will playing at home prove just as valuable this time around for the Firebirds?
Structurally, these teams are very similar and match up well across the court with only two major points of difference. The first is the Firebirds’ holding shooter Romelda Aiken in their attacking line, with the Swifts playing a moving circle of Caitlin Thwaites and Susan Pettitt. The second is the Swifts’ utility attacking player Stephanie Wood, who proved to be the game changer last time these two sides met.
With the chance to host a semi-final on the line, each team will be relying on their gun players to bring their best play and avoid a trip to New Zealand. Who will be named the Australian Conference Champions?
Tune in on Fox Sports Australia and the Netball Live App to watch the game live on Monday 18 July 7.00pm AEST, or catch the replay on ONE HD on Tuesday July 19 at 6.00am.
