Watson soaking up international experience

There will be little time for rest when the Australian Diamonds team returns home after the completion of the three-Test series against England.

The Diamonds will be out to make a clean sweep of the series in the third and final Test at London’s Copper Box Arena on Monday morning (AEDT).

The team will then jump on a plane and fly home to their respective ANZ Championship teams to join in pre-season training that’s already in full swing.

“We get back on Wednesday morning and pretty much into training within the next few days,” Melbourne Vixens and Diamonds midcourter Liz Watson said.

“By (next) Monday we’ll be back into the full swing of things.”

But the 21-year-old’s immediate focus is on ensuring the Diamonds return home with a 3-0 series victory over the Roses.

Australia claimed the first Test in Liverpool by six goals and posted a 16-goal victory over the Roses in London yesterday morning (AEDT).

But in both games England has held the lead in the shadows of half-time before being overpowered by the world champions.

Coach Lisa Alexander and the team’s leaders have stated their desire to finish off the series with a performance as close to a consistent 60-minute effort as possible. Watson agrees.

“England are going to come out wanting to win. We have wrapped up the series but we want to finish off with three wins,” she said.

“It’s going to be another intense game so we need to get a strong start and finish off the series.”

Watson has quickly settled into international netball. She made her debut in the opening Test and played the entire second Test at centre, recording a game-high 17 goal assists.

Teammate Gabi Simpson is impressed by Watson’s start in the green and gold and predicts she has a bright future.

“She is just a tank. She just goes and goes and goes,” Simpson said.

Watson has enjoyed the experience of being immersed in the Diamonds environment – and having her family at each Test has also helped her feel comfortable.

“It’s been incredible,” Watson said. “I’ve really enjoyed the experience, soaked it all in and to have my family here watching has made it extra special.

“I can’t wait to get out there in final Test.”

The second Test of the series will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Network Ten. Check your local guides for details.
