The Victorian Fury have set a new Australian Netball League record for consecutive wins after defeating the Netball NSW Waratahs and Canberra Darters in the opening round of the 2015 season.

The Fury’s streak now stands at 25 matches, eclipsing their previous mark of 24 set back in 2010, following their 52-51 triumph over the Waratahs and 59-43 victory against the Darters at Canberra’s AIS Arena.

The Fury-Waratahs game was a thrilling opener to the season. Fury looked to have the match sealed at three-quarter time when they led by eight goals.

Tassie Spirit got its season off to a winning start, defeating the Darters by 14 goals on Saturday night with in-form shooter Sophie Gunn dominating, scoring 38 goals from 41 attempts.

Waratahs’ shooter Kristina Brice also wowed with her shooting, scoring 43 goals from 47 attempts in NSW’s first win of the season, defeating the Spirit 66–47 on Sunday morning.

Gunn again was instrumental for the Spirit with 29 goals, as was her shooting partner Samantha Gooden. But Brice, the reigning joint MVP and league leading goalscorer, was unstoppable for the Waratahs.

The final match of the weekend would be the record-breaker for Fury. They overcame a slow first-half to gradually pull clear of the Darters and record a 16-goal win. act-vs-tas-anl-week1-20-june-2015-0023

The Darters led at the main break and could sense a possible upset. But Fury showed why they are the defending champions with a dominant third quarter, outscoring the hosts 19-6 to race away with the match.
