About

The diminutive Pat McCarthy (nee Doherty) was first selected in the Australian team and in 1952 and captained Australia on its maiden tour of England in 1956.

In the first ever Test match played between the two countries in London, Australia won 14-11 and went onto record a 3-0 sweep of the series.

McCarthy only stood at 147cm but her speed and ingenuity saw her credited with introducing the skill of passing on the run in netball.

She was known as a mercurial player who took that extra step and delivered the ball in flight.

In 2000 McCarthy was named in Netball Victoria’s Team of the Century.

In 2014 she was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame.
