One change to Diamonds Quad Series team

Samsung Diamonds defender Sharni Layton has not received medical clearance, and will be withdrawn from the January Netball Quad Series.

Emily Mannix has been elevated to the touring squad of 14, from which a final 12 athletes will be named 24 hours prior to each test.

Layton has returned to pre-season training with the Collingwood Magpies ahead of the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season, after taking some time away from the game.

She will attend the Diamonds Simulation Camp at Netball’s Centre of Excellence. Head Coach Lisa Alexander said that although Layton is showing great progression, she is not yet at the level required of the Diamonds on this tour.

“Sharni is progressing well with her training at the Magpies, but has fallen just short of what is required to be test match ready,” explained Alexander.

“We were clear from the outset that her selection would be subject to medical clearance, and we need 14 athletes ready to go in January, for what will be a very demanding test series.

“She will continue in her training with the Magpies, working on progressing her training further.”

Mannix made her Australian Netball Team debut on 3 September 2017 against the Silver Ferns, in a tough match which saw the Ferns win by a 10-goal margin.

The Diamonds squad will gather in Canberra from 11 – 14 January for a Commonwealth Games Simulation Camp, before the 14 Quad Series athletes travel to England.

“Sharni will join us at the Commonwealth Games Simulation Camp, which will also be a Selection Camp for all attending squad athletes, and is very much in the mix for selection in the Commonwealth Games,” Alexander said.

The Netball Quad Series is the final test series for the Samsung Diamonds before the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
