This year’s NetFest, being staged at the popular Queensland tourist destination from 16-19 October, is set to be the biggest and best yet with numbers filling up quickly.
So far around 160 teams have entered the traditional outdoor netball competition and the increasingly popular beach tournament. Overall, more than1700 competitors are expected to hit the courts or the sands at Surfers Paradise over the three days of competition.
This is the fourth year of NetFest, Netball Australia’s mass participation event, and a group of family and friends from a town located in the north of New Zealand’s North Island are already counting down the days until they make their annual trek.
The Bubz Mixed Netball Club (pictured) has entered three teams this year and team spokesman Albert Baker said the club has enjoyed some success at the past three NetFest events, including winning the mixed outdoor competition in the inaugural year of 2011.
“We have worked hard to get to the Gold Coast every year by fundraising and getting sponsorship from many local businesses in the Bay of Islands,” Baker said.
“Netfest is the most well-run netball tournament I have participated in. Everyone is there to have fun and socialise – with a touch of competitiveness.
“It’s a great way to end a long season of netball and what better place to do it in on the Gold Coast.”
“Our team has enjoyed the atmosphere every year that the NetFest provides as it’s an awesome way for us to get away and play the sport we are so passionate about,” Baker said.
“I see every year the growth and the work that goes into organising such a huge event and have appreciated all of the workers behind the scene.”
