Netball inclusion and diversity champions recognised from around Australia

Eight clubs, associations and individuals from around Australia were today announced as winners of the 2016 Australia Post One Netball Community Awards, for their work in creating more connected, inclusive and diverse netball communities.

Now in its third year, the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards celebrate individuals, clubs and associations in local communities who go above and beyond to ensure everyone, regardless of background or ability, is welcome in netball.

The following individuals, clubs and associations were today announced as winners:

Tuggeranong Netball Association, Erindale, ACT

Association Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Association

For actions and activities to support the engagement of ACT’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netball community, and providing opportunities to celebrate and share cultural understanding and reconciliation.

 

Mandy Townsend, Canowindra, NSW

Individual Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Club

For the creation of a netball program to provide opportunities for 40 young girls in a remote area of Central West NSW, generating community connections for participants and their families.

 

Karen Taylor, Merimbula, NSW

Individual Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Club

For the development of an inclusive All Abilities netball program for players with intellectual disabilities on NSW’s Far South Coast.

Individual Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Club

For the creation of the Itiki Sporting Club in Melbourne’s north, providing opportunities for young people from multicultural backgrounds and youth at risk to engage in netball in a positive, supportive environment.

 

Arncliffe Scots Netball Club, Arncliffe, NSW

Club Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Club

For the development of a safe and inclusive environment for Muslim women and girls to participate in netball, resulting in increased participation and engagement from the community.

 

Christine Glenn, Andrews Farm, SA

Individual Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Club

For the creation of an inclusive netball club open to everyone, regardless of age, background or ability, with a focus on increasing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls to participate.

 

Cairns Netball Association, Manunda, QLD

Association Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Association

For the development of a netball carnival and pathway program to provide opportunities and positive life experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women in Far North Queensland.

 

Adelaide Metro Netball Division, Mile End South, SA

Association Award.

Load & Go Card prize value: $1000 for the Association

For the establishment of a netball division in their association competition, catering for women and girls with an intellectual disability since 1982.

 

Australia Post One Netball Ambassador, Melbourne Vixens player and Awards judging panel member, Geva Mentor, said she was very impressed with the standard and quality of nominations all round.

“It’s always so inspiring to hear new stories of individuals, Clubs and Associations who go out of their way to ensure that netball is for everyone. It’s encouraging to see that there are many inclusion champions out there who harness the power of netball to bring people together, regardless of their background or ability,” said Mentor.

Australia Post Chief Customer Officer, Christine Corbett, said Australia Post is passionate about building positive, inclusive and welcoming communities and want to celebrate those who help make this happen.

“We applaud all eight winners and congratulate them for their tremendous effort and for contributing positively in their local community. Our 2016 winners all play a vital role in our society in helping to create a more inclusive Australia.”

As part of the prize, winners will receive a visit from an Australia Post One Netball Ambassador to their club, Australia Post Load&Go Visa Prepaid Gift Cards for their netball club or association and a netball signed by the 2016 Australian Diamonds team.
