Madi Robinson (nee Browne) created history in 2012 when she became the first athlete to win all three individual accolades at the Australian Netball Awards including the coveted Liz Ellis Diamond.
After a stellar year at wing attack for the Melbourne Vixens and the Australian Diamonds, Robinson took the awards by storm, claiming the ANZ Championship Australian Player of the Year, International Player of the Year and the prestigious Liz Ellis Diamond.
“I was in complete shock when my name was announced. I turned to (my husband) Todd and said ‘is this really happening’,” Robinson said of her response to winning the awards.
“I couldn’t believe that I was not only lucky enough to have won the major award but to win all three awards on the one night was incredible and very humbling.
“It is a huge privilege to have been named a recipient of the Liz Ellis Diamond.”
Robinson was vital to the Diamonds’ five victories in the 2012 Quad-Series between England, South Africa and New Zealand, rewarded with Player of the Match honours twice.
“As this award is voted on by your peers, media, coaches and selectors it is an honour to be recognized individually with this award,” Robinson said.
Robinson finds it “humbling” to be recognised amongst the previous winners of the Liz Ellis Diamond, an award that has been celebrated every year since 2008.
“Although we don’t play for these accolades it is delightful being amongst the incredible athletes who have won this prestigious award.”
As well as the honour of winning the award, Robinson treasures the accompanying one carat diamond necklace presented to the winner of the Liz Ellis Diamond.
“Having an incredible quality diamond from Michael Wilson Diamond Jewellers, we are extremely lucky.
“(My necklace is) hidden away in a secret place and brought out on special occasions,” Robinson said.
“Diamonds truly are a girl’s best friend.”
