Laura Geitz undergoes minor knee surgery

2014 Constellation Cup Test 2 - MelbourneAustralian captain Laura Geitz has undergone minor knee surgery to ensure she’s ready to lead the Diamonds’ defence of their Netball World Cup title in Sydney next year.

The operation came after Geitz visited a specialist earlier this week after aggravating the knee injury in the Diamonds’ Constellation Cup series against New Zealand which caused her to miss Australia’s two-Test series against England.

The star defender described the surgical procedure as “a bit of a clean out” and is expected to join in pre-season training with her ANZ Championship teammates at the Queensland Firebirds just before Christmas.

“Twelve months ago there was the idea of surgery, but I waited to see if I could get through with some injury prevention and it did work,” Geitz said.

“But I fell a week short, so now it is the right thing to do.

“Next year is a huge year with the ANZ Championship season kicking off in March and the Netball World Cup in August, so I just really want to be fit and firing for the next 12 months.”

Geitz has led Australia to 17 victories in her 18 Tests as captain, including this year’s Commonwealth Games Gold Medal.
