GEITZ PREPARED TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE IN CAPTAINCY DEBUT

Australia’s Laura Geitz says she plans to lead by example when she captains the Diamonds for the first time on Sunday.

Geitz will run onto the court in Sunday’s first Test of the Constellation Cup against the New Zealand Silver Ferns as just the second Queenslander to captain Australia, following Vicki Wilson, and first defender to lead Australia since Liz Ellis retired in 2007.

“It’s really exciting, I’ve been counting down the days until we head out onto court,” Geitz said.

“I’m really excited about leading the girls out on Sunday but I’ve still got a job to do on court and any leader would agree that the best way to go about your job is to lead by example so I need to make sure that I put out a really strong performance.”

The new leadership group, which includes Bianca Chatfield and Kim Green, will have the chance to mark the occasion with personal milestones tomorrow.

Along with the debut of a new captain, both Chatfield and Green will record their 50th international Test appearances should they take the court against the Silver Ferns at the SIT Fee Free Velodrome.

“To record 50 Test appearances is a fantastic achievement, the pair bring a lot of experience to the team with 100 games between them, they’re both sensational leaders on and off the court,” Geitz said.

“It’s a credit to Bianca especially for being so persistent in her career, she definitely hasn’t had it easy after spending so much time on the bench behind Liz (Ellis) so it’s a true credit to Bianca’s spirit and willpower.”

The Diamonds, who will be out to reclaim the Constellation Cup, are looking to begin a new era with a victory on Sunday night according to coach Lisa Alexander.

“It’s the start of a new era and leadership group with Laura (Geitz), Bianca (Chatfield) and Kim (Green) so we’re very excited, we have the chance to make a mark,” Alexander said.

“We’ve got a really good blend of experience and youth, who have learnt from some wonderful players such as Natalie (von Bertouch), Mo’onia (Gerrard) and Cath (Cox), so it’s an exciting time for Australian netball.”

The Australian Diamonds take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the first Test of the 2013 Constellation Cup at SIT Zero Fees Velodrome in Invercargill on Sunday at 5.40pm (AEST).

The first Test of the 2013 Constellation Cup will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS 3 from 5pm (AEST) and SBS 2 from 5.30pm (AEST).
