The Southern Force sit on top of the ladder undefeated after the opening round of the 2014 Australian Netball League (ANL) in Tasmania.

The Force began their ANL campaign on Saturday evening with a thrilling 50-48 victory over the QLD Fusion in the first game of the season before backing up to beat Tassie Spirit 58-36 on Sunday at the Silverdome in Launceston.

The 2012 premiers raced out to an 11-8 lead at quarter-time against the Fusion and never looked back as the Queenslanders battled hard to bridge the margin over the next three quarters without success in the even contest.

Tassie gave their home crowd a reason to celebrate on Saturday night when they recorded a 52-38 win over the Canberra Darters. It was the visitors who started strongest as the Darters took a two-goal advantage into quarter-time before a 17-11 second quarter saw momentum shift in favour of the Spirit with shooter Sophie Gunn converting 12 of 13 goals for the stanza. The second half saw an even contest but the Darters could do little to prevent a fourth consecutive defeat by the Spirit.

The Fusion bounced back on Sunday morning to hand the Darters their second loss of the weekend with a 67-41 victory. After going down to the Force in their opening game, the Fusion regrouped and came out firing, outscoring Canberra 41-16 at half-time to put the result beyond doubt by half-time and claim their first win of the season.

The Force closed out the first round on Sunday with a 22-goal victory over the hosts, their seventh consecutive victory over Tasmania since the competition’s inception in 2008. After scores were level 14-14 at quarter-time, the Force outscored the Spirit 29-11 in the second half to run out victors and claim an early advantage over the competition.

The Netball NSW Blues, Netball NSW Waratahs, Victorian Flames, Victorian Fury, Western Sting and Territory Storm had the bye.
