Force to be reckoned with in ANL title race

It was an action-packed weekend in the BurtonPhotography-1904459096Australian Netball League in Brisbane and Darwin. Here’s a wrap of what happened in week 2 by AIMEE DAWSON

The Southern Force has made a perfect start to its 2015 Australian Netball League campaign, beating two of last year’s finalists on its way to winning three matches in week two action.

The Force defeated last year’s runners up QLD Fusion, the Netball NSW Waratahs and the Tassie Spirit in Brisbane to open their account, winning all matches by more than 10 goals.

The 2012 champions, who missed the finals last season, set the scene for the weekend by beating Fusion 61-38 after jumping out of the blocks with an 18-goal opening term and led by 15 at the main break.

Young shooter Georgie Virgo dominated in the Force’s 52-40 victory against the Waratahs, shooting 36 goals, and the team returned to Adelaide with all six points after beating the Spirit 65-39.

Fusion bounced back from Friday night’s defeat in its opening match to defeat the Spirit 50-44 – but had to produce a second half fightback after the team from Tassie led narrowly at the main break.

The Fusion then wrapped up the weekend with a 10-goal win over the Waratahs thanks to a 40-goal haul by 17-year-old shooter Abigail Meafou.

BurtonPhotography-12372412226In Darwin, the Victorian Fury continued its winning streak with wins over the Territory Storm and Western Sting to cement top spot on the ladder.

Fury were untroubled in a 61-goal win over the Storm but were made to work hard for their 50-41 victory over the Sting in the final match of the weekend at the Marrara Indoor Stadium.

The Sting headed home with victories over the Storm in the opening game (74-29) and Canberra Darters (60-38) while the Darters opened their account with a 49-42 win over the hosts in one of the closest games of the round.

The Darters got away to a quick start to lead by eight goals at quarter-time but the Storm fought back, despite the loss of key goal shooter Jo Morgan to injury, to trail by three goals at the main break.

In a see-sawing third term, the Darters were able to keep the Storm at arm’s length to lead by four goals heading into the final term and pulled away in the last 15 minutes to win.

The action heads to Perth next weekend with Netball WA’s new multi-million dollar State Netball Centre hosting Week 3 action.
