Diamonds team named for Netball Quad Series

2016 Australian Netball Diamonds Selection Camp Diamonds Coach Lisa Alexander and Team

The Australian Diamonds have named 12 players for the inaugural Netball Quad Series against the England Roses, New Zealand Silver Ferns and South Africa Spar Proteas, beginning 27 August in Auckland.

Six athletes who participated in last weekend’s thrilling ANZ Championship Grand Final between the Queensland Firebirds and NSW Swifts, which was decided in extended extra-time, have been included in the team that will play Australian matches in Adelaide (31 Aug) and Melbourne (4 Sep).

Versatile shooter Stephanie Wood (NSW) and young defender Kristiana Manu’a (NSW) have been rewarded for their strong ANZ Championship seasons, both named in the team for the first time, after travelling as training partners with the Diamonds on their Tour of England in January.

“Last weekend’s ANZ Championship Grand Final demonstrated that our athletes play with fortitude and dogged determination,” said Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander.

“Our Quad Series team features a mixture of exciting young talent and more experienced Diamonds, who will be ready for strong contests against England, New Zealand and South Africa,” she said.

Lisa Alexander and National Selectors Anne Sargeant and Michelle Wilkins have also named an 18 player squad, from which the Australian team for the upcoming Constellation Cup will be named next month.

The squad includes Queensland Firebirds midcourter Caitlyn Nevins, elevated for the first time, following a consistent and excellent ANZ Championship season.

“All 18 players selected in the squad have performed with excellence this year,” said Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander.

“With less than two years until the Commonwealth Games, our priority is managing athlete wellbeing and building our squad, ensuring those who need a break are rested, and those that require international experience are provided with opportunities,” she said.

Clare McMeniman will resume the position of acting captain in the absence of Laura Geitz who is being rested, with Caitlin Bassett and Sharni Layton as acting vice-captains for the Quad Series.
