The Australian Diamonds aren’t settling for the Constellation Cup title as coach Lisa Alexander eyes a 4-1 victory over the New Zealand Silver Ferns when the series wraps up in Canberra on Sunday.
The Diamonds reclaimed the Constellation Cup – lost last year for the first time – on Monday night with a 52-47 victory at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-Test series.
Alexander and the Diamonds head to Canberra on Tuesday with the aim of finishing the series on a high while juggling the need to give players court time in the last trans-Tasman outing before the Commonwealth Games.
“We definitely want to win the series 4-1, there’s no doubt about that, the players want to dominate this series,” Alexander said.
“They’ve done very well so far and they’re planning to bring another terrific performance in Canberra, we want to finish off with a great performance against the Silver Ferns, we don’t want to end the series on a sour note.
“It’s also our last opportunity against New Zealand before next year’s Commonwealth Games so testing some players that haven’t had the opportunities this series is an important factor.”
After recovering on Tuesday morning, the Diamonds will make the trip north to the national capital before being given Wednesday off.
“This break has come at an ideal time because we’ve got a long lead into the Canberra Test, we just need those three days to prepare so to have the Wednesday off is fantastic for the players,” Alexander said.
“Managing energy levels and fatigue is really important in a high performance environment so we’re going to have two days off court to re-energise both mentally and physically.”
The 2013 Constellation Cup will conclude on Sunday when the Australian Diamonds take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns at Canberra’s AIS Arena. The final Test will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS 3 (Channel 503) and SBS 1 from 2pm.
