The Australian Diamonds are looking to open their Quad Series campaign strong against the South Africa Spar Proteas on Saturday in Auckland.
“Being our first game of the Quad Series, it is really important for us to get that strong start, to build our confidence and ensure we are heading in the right direction. That’s really crucial for us moving into the game,” explained defender April Brandley.
“It is important to get our key things out on court that we want to achieve.”
The team is expecting South Africa to be fast and fit, under Head Coach Norma Plummer’s guidance.
“With Norma being the coach we’ll see short, sharp footwork. It’s going to be a really exciting match and I’m looking forward to seeing what is going to unfold out there.”
The Diamonds are a team of 12, not just seven on court, and all players will be ready to take to the court at any time.
“The way that the game is changing now, we need to be ready at any time in any position. It’s so exciting to be part of the 12, it creates great culture and community,” Brandley said.
Midcourter Liz Watson, who made her debut for the Diamonds in the January Tour of England, is also looking forward to getting back into the green and gold.
“We’ve put in the time in the gym, at training and with performance analysis. We’ve haven’t played a Test since January and can’t wait to get out on court. Everyone is ready for game one,” Watson stated.
“It’s going to be very physical. Both teams will have that excitement and nervous energy. It’s going to come down to a really solid start for us and we’ll aim to sustain that for the whole game.”
