Trans-tasman rivalry is back in full flight, with the Australian Diamonds to face off against the New Zealand Silver Ferns four times over the next two weeks during the Constellation Cup.
The two sides return to the site of the Diamonds’ victorious Netball World Cup campaign, Qudos Bank Arena, where they won gold over the Ferns 58-55 in front of a world record netball crowd.
The Diamonds have only made two changes since the last time they met in the Netball Quad Series, with Jo Weston and Gretel Tippett called up, and Kristiana Manu’a and Stephanie Wood rested.
The Ferns have named an extended 15 player squad including star shooter Maria Tutaia, keeping the Diamonds guessing by only naming 12 players 24 hours prior to each game.
Both teams showed grit and determination last time they met in Melbourne, with the home side securing the win in the closing minutes of the game. Shooter Caitlin Bassett had a career-best international performance.
The Diamonds are aiming to start their Constellation Cup campaign strong. With highly accurate shooters down both ends, the game will be won in defence.
From the coach:
“The team looks markedly different, with six of our twelve world champions present. Although we have fresh faces, the determination and trademark of our Diamonds remains the same. Likewise, the Silver Ferns also have quite a different team compared to last year.
“We look forward to playing in front of a thumping Sydney crowd filled with our friends and families, and will harness this energy to channel a strong performance. At the same time, we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted from the task at hand.
“It will take focus and determination to overcome our opposition with every contest making an impact on the game.”
- Last time they met, the Diamonds beat the Silver Ferns 60 – 55 to claim the Netball Quad Series title at Margaret Court Arena.
- The Diamonds are the current holders of the Constellation Cup, winning on five of six occasions.
- There are only two changes to the Diamonds’ team that recently won the Netball Quad Series.
