Countdown begins for Netball World Cup

NSW SWifts vs Queensland Firebirds

In 500 days from today, the world’s best netballers will all be in Sydney for the 14th staging of the Netball World Cup.

Excitement is starting to build around the Australian Diamonds as they look to defend its world champions crown on home soil for the first time since 1991.

To commemorate its 500-day milestone, Netball World Cup has released a video featuring representatives of the netball community stating what they’ll be doing in 500 days’ time and inviting fans to join in the conversation on social media using the hashtags #nwc2015 #500days. 500DTG_SCREEN

Held every four years since 1963, Netball World Cup is the pinnacle event for international netball. Australia has previously hosted the event on two occasions – Perth in 1967 and Sydney in 1991 – and has enjoyed phenomenal success, having won 10 of the 13 titles to date.

While the championship title is the ultimate prize, Netball World Cup is also a celebration of the continued growth and impact of netball globally.

The top six teams based on the International Netball’s Federation’s world rankings in July 2014 automatically qualify, with the remaining 10 participating teams determined through qualifying events to be held in each of the INF’s five regions (Asia, Africa, Americas, Europe and Oceania) between May and September 2014.

Netball World Cup Chief Executive Marne Fechner is determined to make Sydney 2015 the best and biggest celebration of netball ever seen.

“24 years (since Australia last hosted) is a long time. A whole generation of Australian netballers and fans haven’t seen an event of this magnitude,” Fechner said.

“We’ve set ourselves bold aspirations – to stage the most successful World Cup in history, set new benchmarks for international netball, and deliver a strong legacy for our sport.

“For the first time, the competition will be held over 10 days, and will see top-ranked teams go head-to-head right from the outset”.

The opening ceremony will be held on Friday 7 August, with the Gold Medal match to be contested on Sunday 16 August.

The first opportunity to purchase tickets will be in May 2014, when domestic and international travel packages are released. Individual tickets will go on sale in early 2015.
