Australian captain Laura Geitz puts netball on hold to start a family

2015 World Netball Cup Day 3 Australia v New Zealand Laura Geitz

Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebirds Captain Laura Geitz will put netball on hold after announcing that she and husband Mark are expecting their first child next March.

The two-time world champion is unavailable for selection for the upcoming Constellation Cup and will not play in the 2017 new national netball league season.

“This is incredibly exciting news for Laura and Mark, we are absolutely thrilled for them,” said Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander.

“Laura will always be part of our Diamonds family, and we look forward to welcoming the newest member of her family.”

“On behalf of the Diamonds and support staff, we wish her all the best in this exciting phase of her life.”

Geitz, who made her international debut against England in 2008, has amassed 64 Test caps for Australia, including 29 Tests as captain, with just three losses at the helm.

The defender was an integral part of Australia’s 2011 World Netball Championships, and led the Diamonds to gold medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.

The Diamonds’ Constellation Cup team will be named on Monday.
