ANZ Championship Grand Final Preview

After the Firebirds defeated the Northern Mystics and the Swifts overcame the WBOP Magic in the ANZ Championship Semi-Finals last week, they both secured their spot to face-off in the Grand Final.

The Australian Conference Champions, the Firebirds, earned the right to host the Grand Final at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Sunday June 21, their third home final this season.

The Firebirds, who will feature in their third consecutive Grand Final, will be looking to go one better in front of their home crowd and add another trophy beside the 2011 ANZ Championship title.

With the new Challenge Trophy and Australian Conference Title already in the cabinet, the Firebirds have an opportunity to become the first team to win the ANZ Championship’s `triple crown’.

Up until three weeks ago the Swifts were unable to shake a ‘finals curse’ that saw them lose every final they have featured in since their inaugural ANZ Championship Premiership in 2008. They will be hoping to take their second trophy back to Sydney.

The Firebirds are in scintillating form, having not lost a game since their opening round encounter with the West Coast Fever.

After a draw against the Swifts in Round 3, the Firebirds have gone on a 12-game winning streak.

The Swifts have had a bumpier road to finals, including three draws, although have taken their game to a new level at the right time of the season.11391109_10152848174367651_8076729757458330512_n

In the closing rounds of the ANZ Championship season the Swifts have traveled all around Australia and across the Tasman for the Semi-Final.

Their only loss since Round 7 was the 11-goal defeat to the Firebirds in the Australian Conference Final a fortnight ago.

It’s the third consecutive year and fourth time in eight seasons the Grand Final will be an all-Australian contest.

It is also the last chance Australian Diamonds squad members will have to impress before the team for Netball World Cup SYDNEY is announced on Wednesday June 24.

These two teams have had three encounters already this season, resulting in two Firebirds victories and a draw.

Will the Swifts win their first game against the Firebirds this season, or will the Firebirds retain their record of never losing a final on home soil? Time will only tell.
