The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has announced scholarships to some of Australia’s best young netball players for 2013.
Of the 15 athletes chosen, 14 are also part of the Australian 21/U squad for 2013 as they aim to become the next crop of Diamonds.
Under head coach Julie Fitzgerald the squad will enjoy expert coaching and state-of-the-art facilities as well as access to world-leading sports science and sports medicine.
Fitzgerald says many of Australia’s finest netballers have progressed though the AIS program as it provides the platform for future success.
“Our training program is based on developing the skills and tactics needed by Australian teams to be successful against international competition,” Fitzgerald said.
“I am sure that we have players in this squad who will step up to represent Australia at the senior level.”
Persistence has paid off for new scholarship holder shooter Kaylia Stanton, who is the daughter of three-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games high jump gold medallist Christine Stanton (nee Annison). After missing Australian squads at 17/U and 19/U levels, she gained selection in the Australian 21/U team this year and now wins an AIS scholarship.
Four members of the squad, Cody Lange (Adelaide Thunderbirds), Maddy Proud (Adelaide Thunderbirds), Kate Shimmin (Adelaide Thunderbirds) and Micaela Wilson (Melbourne Vixens) have ANZ championship contracts.
AIS Director Matt Favier said the AIS, in partnership with Netball Australia and state institutes/academies, provides the sport with a strong base of talented junior netballers.
“The AIS netball program was established as a foundation program in 1981 and has a fine record and tradition of producing netballers who have gone on to excel at the elite level of the game and we are justifiably proud of that achievement,” Favier said.
Some of the current Australian Diamonds players who have progressed from the AIS Netball program include Natalie Von Bertouch, Catherine Cox, Rebecca Bulley, Chanel Gomes, Kimberley Green, Chelsea Pitman and Susan Pratley.
